An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a smaller, independent residential dwelling unit located on the same lot as a stand-alone single family home. An ADU may be a detached separate structure or attached and part of the main house. ADU's go by many different names throughout the U.S., including backyard homes, accessory apartments, secondary dwellings and grannyflats. They can be used as a legal rental unit or as a great space to entertain or house family and friends. The State of California recently passed an exciting new law legalizing the permitting of conversions of structures like garages into ADU's as well as the creation of new ADU's from scratch.

Owner, Ira Belgrade, was the first person in the City of Los Angeles to permit his unpermitted, rented guest house into a legal ADU under California's new law. He was instrumental in passing this legislation and started YimbyLA to help others do the same for their ADUs. YimbyLA will permit and legalize your unpermitted illegal guest house, garage conversion or unpermitted converted accessory structure. YimbyLA will also assist with a new conversion or building an ADU from scratch!
